How To Protect Your Decoder From Load Shedding Damage

The need to protect your electrical equipment including your DStv decoder with these ongoing scheduled and unscheduled load shedding is real. Cape Direct Connect has created a basic guideline on what you can do to prevent damage to your DStv Decoder and what you can do to troubleshoot your decoder if it has been affected by load shedding.

The golden rule is to switch off the plugs once power goes off. This ensures that in the event there is a surge when power goes back on, your electrical appliances including your DSTV Decoder will not be damaged as a result. Now on the other hand if you are already experiencing problems with your decoder after load shedding, below we have step by step guides on how you restore your DSTV decoder to the state it was in before the load shedding.

In most cases this problem can be fixed without calling a DSTV Technician, if you follow the steps below, you should be able to restore signal to your DSTV decoder in no time. To fix this we need to reboot the decoder this way

You need to switch off your DSTV Decoder from the plug
Remove the decoder power cable from the power source
Unscrew the white cable at the back of the decoder coming from the LNB
Leave cables unplugged for a period of 3 minutes
Screw back the white LNB cable you removed in Step 3
Put back the power cable you removed in Step 2
Switch on your Decoder
Wait for decoder to scan.

If the steps above did not fix the problem, then I would advise you to take your decoder to Multichoice to be tested. If your decoder is not the problem you can give us a call and we can send out one of our technicians to restore your signal

In most cases this problem can be fixed without calling a DSTV Technician, if you follow the steps below, you should be able to restore signal to your DSTV decoder in no time. To fix this we need to reboot the decoder this way

You need to remove the smartcard from your DSTV Explora Decoder
You need to switch off your DSTV Explora Decoder from the plug
Remove the Explora power cable from the power source
Unscrew the white cable at the back of the decoder coming from the LNB
Leave cables unplugged for a period of 3 minutes
Screw back the white LNB cable you removed in Step 4
Put back the power cable you removed in Step 3
Insert the smartcard you removed in Step 1
Switch on your Decoder
Wait for decoder to scan.

If the steps above did not fix the problem, then I would advise you to take your decoder to Multichoice to be tested, if your decoder is insured then you will get it replaced free of charge by Multichoice.
